This week’s 10 is drawn from a lot of Nostalgia in my life.

The first time I really fell in love with music was listening to Pink Floyd, Deep Purple and the likes, in Dad’s car on the little USB he used to put pirated songs on. Our relationship has been growing lately due to some family hardships so these ones have been very relevant in my life. Have a Cigar and Child in Time are two he used to play me, we’d listen to the electric solo’s together.

Bands like this sparked my love for guitar in the production of rap music — the first song, Tapatio, is produced by The Alchemist who’s a legendary producer known for his utilisation of guitar. Ratatat famously uses the electric guitar in his production, one my favourites (he was on last week’s list). The Outkast song, Gasoline Dreams is another of my favourite rap songs featuring that sweet electric guitar. I have always said Psychedelic/Alternative rap is my thing, so here you go — weird, trippy rap.

Speaking of electric guitar, this is just a sweet one from Blue Oyster Cult. I discovered them in grade 9 when we had to record a song in the studio for music class. One of my friends’ group performed ‘Don’t Fear the Reaper’ which has remained a favourite of mine for years.

Mick Jenkins is a Chicago native, his debut album, The Water(s), was one I really loved in high school. For my Macgregor homies, reminds me of the alleyway, would always listen walking down that bad boy. I actually found him through Triple J, pretty sweet.

I threw a song from the new Babe Rainbow album on here too, I was just really enjoying it this week. I saw them live recently, my friend Emily’s band, The Oogars, were opening for them. Start to finish a great show — shout out to The Oogars, I got a feeling they’ll be on my list very soon… The Wind does a great job of transporting me to a beach in Mexico or something — wouldn’t that be nice right about now. That’s what it does for me, tell me where it takes you.

‘Pink Matter’ holds a special place in my music collection, the first song that made me really, really love music. It was one of the first times I smoked and listened too as well. Frank is going back and forth with himself, internally discussing the disconnect between the physical pleasure from a woman, and the emotional connection that he can have. The title is a twist on the term “grey matter” used to talk about the brain; in this case referring to the female anatomy. This is just one of those songs that just all-out connects with me — I love it so much. It also has a great verse from Andre 3000 of Outkast — talking about his feelings of withdrawals post break-up

I know’ is another nostalgic one for me — reminding me of my time studying in Canada. I discovered Blood Orange when I was over there and when I heard this song I played it upwards of one million times. The piano solo in this song gets me every time, it’s really special. This song will always have a place in my favourite songs of all time.

I finished out with Epitaph, a King Crimson masterpiece. This song speaks on the impending doom that Peter Sinfield predicts. “I fear tomorrow I’ll be crying” fearing tomorrow could be the final day, a valid concern during the times of the Cold War. As well as the lyrics, it’s musically a really lovely song — the vocal melody is awesome all the way through.

Hope you enjoyed — until next Friday.

I’ll be writing about music, songs I recommend and some of my experience at live events too.
